Happy Jamaica Independence Day!

August 6, 2025

6th August 2025 celebrates 63 years of independence

Just over 63 years ago, on 19 July 1962, the Parliament of the United Kingdom passed the Jamaica Independence Act, granting independence as of 6 August 1962. After more than 300 years of colonial rule, the Union Jack was lowered and replaced by the Jamaican flag throughout the country.

This is one of the most important public holidays in Jamaica and many celebrations, parades and festivals take place.

In New Zealand, Jamaicans are currently classed as being part of the very mixed MELAA ethnic grouping (Middle Eastern, Latin American and African), so it is all the more important to recognise and learn about the multiple ethnicities forming this grouping. Like New Zealand, Jamaica is also another nation who has experienced colonial rule.

It is great to hear how Independence Day is being celebrated here in New Zealand, highlighting the strong Jamaican community here and their desire to celebrate their culture and heritage. Last night a Jamaican-inspired fine dining experience took place at Advieh Restaurant & Bar in Auckland, created by chef Gareth Stewart and mixologist Adam Neal. On Saturday, a "Fish And Bread With Nealske" Roots Party is happening at Nanny's Eatery on August 9th, a Kingsland eatery which we are so pleased to hear is now back in business after a brief hiatus: https://www.undertheradar.co.nz/gig/97686/Fish-And-Bread-With-Nealske---Jamaican-Independence-Day-Roots-Party.utr

“Out of many, one people” is the Jamaican national motto, signifying diversity and unity. Love this.
