Looking beyond Christmas: Take a moment to celebrate what’s happening around you

November 13, 2025

It’s a small question that can make a big difference

As Christmas decorations and sales have already been in our shops and some workplaces for a good few weeks now, with still 6 weeks to go until 25th December, it’s worth pausing to ask:
What else is being celebrated in our communities right now?

Just last week, Sikh communities in Aotearoa New Zealand, and millions worldwide, marked Guru Nanak Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. His teachings of equality, compassion, humility and service continue to inspire people everywhere. And next month, Jewish communities around the world will begin Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights – another celebration of faith, resilience and hope.

Moments like these remind us that while Christmas may dominate the airwaves and retail displays, it’s far from the only meaningful observance at this time of year.

Taking time to learn about the celebrations of others helps us to:
• build cultural awareness
• avoid “seasonal bias” (where one holiday overshadows others)
• create workplaces, schools and communities where everyone’s traditions are visible, valued and validated.

Inclusion isn’t about doing less for Christmas, it’s about making space for others too. When workplaces model that curiosity and validation, we send a clear message that everybody, and every tradition, is valued. So this season, as Christmas playlists start early and calendars fill up, take a moment to ask:
“What are others around me celebrating?”

It’s a small question that can make a big difference.
